She is now having a little vacation time in her hometown of Crested Butte, Colo. Although Montag’s husband,” The Hills” co-star, Spencer Pratt is very supportive of his wife’s decision of getting all of those 10 surgeries, her mom is not that happy at all. But when asked why she did it, Montag, 23 said that she wish to be the most beautiful, inside and out and it is just part of being a pop star. Well, let’s wait and see if the new face of Heidi will make her shine brightly like dog tag necklaces.

Last Thursday, October 15, 2009, people got worried and curious when news came out that a six-year-old boy, not from Norwalk,Connecticut, got lost and was believed to be trapped in a helium balloon that soared about 60 miles eastern Colorado . This is truly no ordinary news as it involved the life of a child who probably doesn’t have any identification, such as a dog tag, thus it will be hard to locate him if ever he fell out of the floating balloon and needed to be located and returned safe back at their home.

What’s more interesting about this incident is that the family involved in it, the Heene family, is as well extra ordinary as they are storm chasers and science fanatic peeps that once appeared in the 100th episode of ABC’s “Wife Swap” This character of the family, especially that of the parents, made people a bit apprehensive regarding the truth of the incident. Doubts were more fueled when after numerous hours of ground and air searches, the 10 year old boy, Falcon Heene, was discovered to be hiding in a box in the attic of their house in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Speculations started to form that the non-wearing dog tag boy’s parents, Richard and Mayumi Heene, might have intentionally facilitated the said event in order to promote their upcoming reality show.  The police remained mum in the days that followed as they did further investigations about the said accusations.

Three days after the unusual news; police released a statement that the Heene’s Balloon story is proven to be a prank. Sheriff Jim Alderden, shared to reporters last Sunday that, “It has been determined this was a hoax. It was a publicity stunt.”  He also added that while the investigation is still ongoing, there will be no arrest to be made at the moment. Heene’s lawyer, David Lane, said that he wants to shun from “the public spectacle and humiliation” of police men arresting the parents in front of their kids and assured that both Richard and Mayumi Heene will turn themselves to authorities if it’s already the right time.

I need a space program. Before you ask, I’m not an astronaut wanna be or rocket
scientist. In fact, I’m not anything like that. I’m just a girl, a master’s student, and
educator. But I need a space program. America needs a space program. Now let me tell
you why.

Yesterday, ATK, a premier aerospace company, test fired their latest invention: a new
rocket slated to be used in the Ares I, NASA’s up and coming manned space flight
vehicle. I can tell you it was a big event. There were all kinds of press and dignitaries
from all over the state and from NASA. There were ATK employees and their families,
school aged kids on fieldtrips, and a few curious neighbors all standing together in the
middle of the afternoon in the middle of a desert to watch this rocket. The event was
broadcasted live across NASA TV so those who couldn’t be there in person could still
pause in the middle of a Thursday afternoon and watch a mountain of smoke and fire
burn for a couple of minutes.

I couldn’t be there. But I jumped online around 12:45 to watch the show. My computer
wasn’t working properly, so I ran around in panic for the next 15 minutes trying to get it
working, my mother and her classroom full of 3rd graders on the phone with me
describing every tick of the countdown clock. It sounded something like this: “OK.
Where are we? 90 seconds! It’s going to fire in 90 seconds. But wait do you remember
what happened last time when the clock got to 20 seconds? Right the clock stopped and
the rocket couldn’t fire because one little piece didn’t work right. Where are we now? 30
seconds…20 seconds…still going…10 seconds…5, 4, 3, 2, 1….Wow there is goes! Look
at the fire! And the smoke! Mikaylie, I bet if you go outside you could see the smoke.”
I did run outside. Sadly, I saw nothing. But I didn’t expect too. That rocket was at least
two mountain ranges away. Regardless, looking over the mountains at a clear blue sky, I
still felt proud, perhaps coupled with a tinge of loss, but proud none the less.

Now, before you write me off as a geek or nerd, I probably should confess to something.
I used to work at ATK. You might think that colors my story, but I promise what I wrote
was true. I am nobody in rocket science. I worked at ATK for 3 months as an intern in
their training department. I designed training packages, none of which had anything to do
with rockets really, and if they did, I can assure you I had know idea what was going on.
But I did learn a few things while I was working there. I’d say my greatest lesson came
on my last day. I cleaned out my desk, checked out through security, got in my car and
drove the hour home. But when I got home, I had no idea what to do with myself. I spent
the rest of the day sorting through old work papers, gathering up the posters and flight
patch stickers I had been given for my mother’s students, and I even sat melancholy
through Tom Hanks and Apollo 13. It was pathetic, but some of our most profound
lessons are learned at our most pathetic moments. In that moment I learned that the space
program isn’t about space exploration. It’s about progress and progress is something
every American needs.

Progress: a continuation of value, a constant moving forward. America is a nation
established on this idea. We have a president in White House elected because of this idea.
There is no doubt, America has made progress, significant progress. But can say we are
doing so now?

It’s important to remember that with any type of investment in progress, there is an equal
or sometimes greater investment in hope. Right now, America is a country at war,
literally and metaphorically. Every American is fighting a battle, the battle of the
unemployed, the battle of the uninsured, the battle of the uneducated. There have been
causalities. In my mind, I see a fleet of Americans raising the white flag, sending home
their dog tags, lying down in their respective boxes and allowing themselves to be
buried deeper in this recession. We sure could use an investment in hope about now, one
with wide potential to pay off.

Now I’m not an economist. I’m not a politician. And we already know, I’m not a rocket
scientist. I’m just a girl who for 3 months was able to invest something in progress by
investing myself in the space program, and now I’m really hopeful about the future. I
look at the stars and wonder what’s up there, thinking we might know someday. I see a
shuttle launch or a rocket test fire and feel a sense of pride and of progress that isn’t
temporary because when will humans every run out of space to explore.
To me, the question is not whether or not this country can afford to invest in a space
program. America needs a space program. The question is how do we get President
Obama and millions of Americans to feel the same way. Maybe we should invite them to
the next launch? Just an idea.

Once, I was allowed to serve my country in the comfort of my own home. I stood at attention, saluted the flag, and serviced the servicemen of this great nation and send military dog tags to every man. Or shall I say serviceman. Mine was a patriotic act deeply personal, that of which many women have undertaken and find great pleasure in. I loved a military man. And just any military man, a United States Marine.

Marines are a different breed of men. They reason with complete removal of emotion 
yet speak with sentiment about the destruction of world’s they’ve encountered. Contemplative but careless, wildly egocentric, brash, belligerent; they are a mesh of contradictions. They are tender but tough, forceful but reserved, charismatically gruff. Sometimes they hate what they do, but they always believe in it. They’ve orphaned so much life has to offer: family, safety, permanence- but they do not care. They live like they speak: brusquely, candidly, without apology and with a certainty that this is the life for them.

Together Marines can be a thing to behold: drinking and swearing, singing and slapping each other on the back, saying things like, “remember that time at Okinawa.” But in the eyes of any military man you see how they live, their rash life that can be picked up and packed away at a moment’s notice, their disconnection with people and place, their sheer will that often supersedes bravery. Knowing them you are conscious of a whole new way of life, one that involves the elaborate mechanics of killing, strategic violence, and strict uniformity. Military men bring what it means to be an American, the beauty and the burden, and set it before you.

You see for the first time the corporeality of war; it’s actual materiality. The war lay next to me at night, it breathed and dreamed, pulled me close and touched my body. It was not just a flash of news on CNN or an article on the front page. It was real, and it belonged to us all. It was a life and a death. A friend and a family member, someone dearly loved. It was the man by my side, and so many others, with a long life ahead, marching off to a place he might not come back from. I never felt his fear, only a casual calmness that whatever happened he would be okay. With that, he taught me when facing the unknown you must meet it boldly and that in chaos poise was certainly possible.

Military men live life hard-nosed and with intensity, but they value the simple: a warm meal, the correspondence of a friend, a photo of the family. They are passionate, sturdy men. Meticulous, built, and brave, a military man is everything you would expect him to be, and sometimes even a little sweet and endearing.

So women, if you haven’t already had you’re run with a military man I hope that someday you do; it is a unique experience. Be it the Marines, Army, Navy, or Air force, the armed forces of this nation have a lot to teach us. And strangely enough it is not always because of the job they do but because of the way they live. My Marine taught me to be brave, not because he was a Marine but because he lived what he believed, and that is a hard thing to do, perhaps the hardest.

The members of the United States military are proud men and they make you proud to be with them, contributing to a life that is sewn together with orders, ranks, and letters written among sand and sea. You can’t help but to believe in them. They leave you with dog tags and broken hearts but you don’t care. You wake up smiling, thinking about the countries they’ve been in, wondering where they will go next, and who will be there to listen to their stories and nibble on their ear in the dark and get all teary eyed thinking of the things they’ve done and the things they’ll do- for me and for you and for everyone who lives in a county that fights to stay free.
